Two decades of songs you know every word to, three hours, and a painting on the passenger seat just after 9pm. You paint something you would happily hang in the hallway, and you lose your voice doing it. Nobody plans the second part. It happens somewhere around the second chorus and there is no way back. Lotti Rem is on the mic all night singing live, which changes the whole shape of the room. A playlist gets tolerated. A real voice gets joined. Your host works the crowd between songs and calls the painting one step at a time, so you are never sitting there wondering whether that blob was meant to happen. The 80s go first, all big drums and bigger hair, then the 90s take over once the room has warmed up and stopped worrying about who is watching. By the last hour the canvases are nearly done, the singing is unanimous, and somebody at the back is doing choreography they have not attempted since school formal. The Balaclava sits right on Mulgrave Road, which makes it about as easy as Cairns gets. Ten minutes from the CBD, a couple of minutes from Woree, Bayview Heights and Westcourt, and a straight run up from Mount Sheridan, Edmonton and Bentley Park. We are back in the region the very next night for the 70s and 80s Saturday at Smithfield, and the full calendar lives across the rest of Queensland. Tonight's Artwork Peacock A peacock in cobalt and midnight blue, standing in profile against a sky of flat, fearless red, with green and gold tail feathers fanning right across the canvas, each one tipped with a bright yellow eye. Red behind blue should not work and absolutely does. The tail looks like the hard part and turns out to be the fun part, long confident sweeps of the brush with the eyes dropped in at the end, no fussing and nothing fiddly. Most people finish this one and immediately start deciding which wall it is going on. Live singing, not a speaker in the corner. What are we painting? A cobalt blue peacock against a red sky, with green and gold tail feathers sweeping across the canvas. If you want to tweak the colours to suit your lounge room, say so on the night and we will help you shift them, no extra charge. Is singing along optional? On paper, yes. In practice you will be three words into the first chorus before you notice. Expect call and response moments and a few songs you did not know you still had. What time does it finish? Painting starts at 6pm and runs three hours, so brushes are down around 9pm. Do I need painting experience? None at all. We guide every step from blank canvas to finished painting, and the tail feathers that look complicated go on one confident stroke at a time. Is this good for a hens or birthday group? Ideal.
