Firecrackers Discosoma Mushrooms

Firecrackers Discosoma Mushrooms, Discosoma sp., are brightly colored corallimorpharians with broad fleshy oral discs and a smooth, radially ridged surface. This specimen displays intense red to red-orange coloration across the entire disc, with subtle pink highlights and a small contrasting central mouth. The strong uniform red coloration gives these mushrooms a vivid, glowing appearance under reef aquarium lighting. Fine radial folds extend from the center toward the outer margin, creating a structured sunburst pattern across each disc. Their smooth, fleshy texture and saturated color make them especially eye-catching in a reef display. Discosoma species contain symbiotic photosynthetic dinoflagellates that provide much of their nutritional energy. They can also absorb dissolved nutrients and capture fine suspended organic material from the surrounding water. Because species-level identification cannot be confirmed reliably from external appearance and coloration alone, Discosoma sp. is the most scientifically appropriate designation for this specimen. Care Guide: Scientific Name: Discosoma sp. Care Level: Easy Lighting: Low to Moderate Water Flow: Low to Moderate, indirect flow Placement: Lower to middle areas of the aquarium depending on lighting intensity Temperament: Generally peaceful, but allow room for expansion and spreading Feeding: Primarily photosynthetic; may also benefit from fine suspended plankton and organic particles Growth Form: Broad fleshy oral discs that may reproduce and spread across nearby hard surfaces Water Parameters: Maintain stable reef aquarium temperature and salinity. Keep nitrate and phosphate measurable and reasonably stable rather than excessively low. Special Considerations: Avoid strong direct flow, which can prevent full expansion or cause the mushrooms to detach from their substrate. Gradually acclimate to stronger lighting. Allow adequate room for expansion and potential reproduction onto neighboring rockwork.
