New Zealand Pebble Ring, Made for Vered

This is where it started. In 2016 Vered was walking a beach in New Zealand and began picking up pebbles, the way you do without thinking about it, until her hands were full of them. She brought them back with her and laid them out on my bench. We measured them, turned them over, and chose one green pebble out of all of them. She asked for a ring, and she asked for one small point of light on the stone. A pebble is not a gemstone. You cannot hold it in claws without hiding it, and you cannot heat it. So I drilled into the stone itself with a diamond burr, set a small gold cup into the hole, and bezel set the diamond inside the cup. The diamond sits in the pebble, not on top of it. From underneath, a second hole takes a gold pin, fixed with a special adhesive, and that pin is what carries the stone on the band. The band is 14K yellow gold, plain and narrow, so nothing competes with the stone. The work took about two weeks. When it was finished, Vered asked me to pick out two matching pebbles from the same handful, for earrings. That became the New Zealand Pebble Earrings, and the way they were built has stayed with me ever since. This piece was made for Vered and is not for sale.
