Sea Buckthorn
About the Sea Buckthorn Sea Buckthorn is a tough, drought- and salt-tolerant shrub with narrow silver-green leaves. It thrives in poor, dry and alkaline soils where other shrubs struggle, and it is widely used on the prairies for shelterbelts, erosion control and wildlife cover. Its dense, thorny branches make an effective barrier, and its roots fix nitrogen to improve the soil. Sea Buckthorn is male or female: female plants produce bright orange, vitamin-rich berries in late summer when a male plant is nearby. Plants spread by suckers, so give them room or plant where a thicket is welcome. Check out our free PDF Tree Planting Guide.
