The Cobalt Muse — Expressionist Female Portrait - 1970s

A compelling vintage figurative painting depicting a female nude rendered in a boldly expressive, highly painterly manner. The composition centers on a solitary female figure emerging from a saturated cobalt-blue ground. Her elongated face, dark almond-shaped eyes and sweeping black hair are rendered with a deliberate economy of form, while the body is built through broad, gestural passages of white, grey, ochre and soft flesh tones. Thickly worked areas of paint and visible brushwork give the surface a wonderfully immediate, tactile quality. Stylistically, the work belongs to the tradition of Figurative Expressionism, where recognizable human form is retained while proportion, colour and anatomy are freely interpreted in favour of emotional and visual impact.
