Roche Bobois Mah-Jong 18 piece Modular Sofa in Kenzo Takada and Missoni Fabric
A substantial 18 pieces Mah-Jong sofa designed by Hans Hopfer for Roche Bobois, in a mix of Kenzo Takada Fabric and Missoni fabric. The set is in good condition, with light fabric wear on a few pieces and buttons missing, which are covered by the backrests. No rips on fabrics, some wear on some of the base pieces. The set has been cleaned and is ready for use. The set comprises of: 12 flat base pieces. 3 fixed backrest pieces. 1 adjustable backrest piece. 2 corner pieces. Designed by Hans Hopfer in 1971, the Mah Jong sofa is an iconic model of the Roche Bobois collections, and offers total freedom of form and function. From three simple elements, stacked or juxtaposed, the Mah Jong allows for infinite compositions. Each cushion is entirely handcrafted and sewn in a dedicated workshop. Dressed in assertive fabrics that match its design, the Mah Jong remains a reference point for creativity and modularity. An uninhibited and audacious designer, Kenzo Takada, “the most Parisian of Japanese designers”, has created a unique and exceptional collection of fabrics and ceramics for Roche Bobois. To ‘dress' the Mah Jong modular sofa, Takada drew inspiration from ancient kimonos used in the Noh Theatre, reinterpreting their patterns and colors to create fine and sophisticated harmonies symbolizing the 3 times of the day: Asa (morning), Hiru (midday), Yoru (evening). This fabric on this set is from the Composition Asa and Yoru collection.
