Three Chandigarh Laboratory Stools

Three Chandigarh Laboratory Stools

Brand: Collection EE40

Designed in the manner of Pierre Jeanneret Chandigarh, India, circa 1950s–1960s A scarce pair of utilitarian laboratory stools from the celebrated Chandigarh project, characterised by their honest construction and functional modernist design. Each stool features a circular solid timber seat supported by a simple welded steel frame with three splayed legs joined by a circular stretcher. Originally produced for educational and governmental buildings within Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret's ambitious Chandigarh programme, stools of this type were intended for laboratories, workshops and institutional settings where durability and practicality were paramount. Their restrained form and worn surfaces exemplify the aesthetic now associated with Chandigarh furniture: utility elevated through proportion, materiality and patina. The stools retain extensive evidence of use, including worn timber surfaces, oxidised metal frames and inventory markings, all contributing to their authentic character and provenance.
