Konyu PB (Washed, Kenya)
High on the volcanic slopes of Mount Kenya, more than 6,000 smallholder farmers help bring this PB lot to life through the Konyu Factory in Kirinyaga County. Rich red soil, high altitude, and steady mountain rainfall create the perfect recipe for bold, expressive coffee. Fun fact about the coffee: a peaberry (PB) is a rare natural mutation in which the cherry only yields one almost spherical (pea-like) bean instead of two flat sided beans. This is not exclusive to a particular varietal – you come across it across origins although most commonly found in Tanzania and Kenya. There’s no way to visually distinguish this quirk from the cherry, it’s only after being pulped are they sorted into their groups. Kenyan PBs are typically characterised by their brightness and chocolately flavour and their uncooperativeness to roast! Although we think we have done a decent job here, and it’s tasting great: forest fruit cake, citrus with a buttery finish.
