Trickster Berries - Dried Miracle Fruit

Waiters carry in small red fruit on silver plates and insist that you must try it. You slowly chew a berry half, rolling it in your mouth so the dissolving fruit coats your tongue. It transforms sour tastes into dazzling sweetness, flavors that are magical but misleading. When you close one eye, you see that the rich sweet wine being served is but vinegar. Your pouch contains 6 halved freeze-dried Synsepalum dulcificum berries. To experience the transformative magic of this fruit, eat half a berry, making sure to coat your entire tongue as you chew. The berries contain a glycoprotein miraculin which binds to the sweet sensors on your tongue, causing sour foods to taste sweet. The effect lasts about 20-40 minutes. Try a lemon, which will taste like lemonade. Goat cheese or Greek yogurt will taste like cheesecake. Simple fruit like strawberries will be enhanced.
