Overall Notes: Black Plums, Raisins Roast level: Light Medium roast Brew Methods: Great for both filter and espresso, including but not limited to Orea, xBloom, Origami, V60, Kalita. It presents bright flavours on espresso and a pleasant fruity cup on milk based coffees. Performs well on French Press, Delter and Aeropress as well. About the producer / region: With nearly 700,000 coffee producers, roughly 70% of which are smallholder producers, Kenya shines as a unique coffee producing country in East Africa. Within the Murang'a County is the Kioru farm, belonging to the Kioru Farmers’ Cooperative Society (FCS). The FCS now has 350 members, but the Kioru farm is an independent farm with its own processing facilities. Kioru was named after a village in the area and strangely translates to mean ‘bad’ in the local Kikuyu language. Situated at roughly 1,632 meters above sea level, the region where the farm is located is defined by its bright red soils, full of rich nutrients for coffee trees. The high altitude allows for cool temperatures and ideal rainfall or the slow maturation of coffee cherries. The staff adds manure, compost, coffee pulp and green manure to enrich their soil. After the ripe cherries are harvested, they are delivered to the mill where they are sorted and then dispersed on raised beds. The cherries remain here to dry in the open sun for 2–4 weeks, or until the moisture content reaches 12–13%. In order to prevent the growth of mold, the cherries are regularly raked, which also ensures even drying. This lot was sourced by the Kenya Co-operative Coffee Exporters Limited (KCCE), and its creation was supported by the government in response to the vital need for coffee producers in Kenya to have more control over the marketing of their coffee in order to increase income. The organization was formed to address the many challenges smallholders face in Kenya, with its main goal being to assist with processing, promoting, and marketing the coffee from these producers.
