Founded following a major silver and gold strike in the 1860s, the town quickly grew into a thriving mining center with hotels, saloons, newspapers, and a population that swelled into the thousands during its peak years. Idaho’s territorial government briefly considered making Silver City the territorial capital, a testament to its early prominence, but the decline of the ore deposits in the late nineteenth century gradually emptied the town of its ambitions and its people.
