Lacework Doily Workshop

In this class we will learn lacework by knitting a square doily. Square doilies make for a touch of classiness and some doilies are large enough to fully cover a graduation cap, making them an elegant and thoughtful graduation gift for a loved one in your life who will be walking the stage for commencement soon! This project begins with knitting on double pointed needles and is finished using crochet. We will meet for FIVE sessions for this project. Skills we will focus on in this class: ● Reading lacework charts and written instructions ● Knitting with double pointed needles (DPNs) - Note: circular knitting needles are not an appropriate substitute for this project ● Yarn overs and slanted decreases knit two together (k2tog) and slip-slip-knit (ssk) Skill level: Advanced beginner in knitting; beginner in crochet When: Fridays May 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 at 1-3 pm Instructor: Lindsay Anderson Fee: $100 PREREQUISITES: ● Ability to knit in the round, especially at small circumferences. This means basic mastery of double pointed needles. Due to the challenges of small gauge knitting, this may not be the ideal project to learn knitting in the round for the first time. ● Basic crochet chaining and single crochet stitch. Materials: ● Yarn - Any lace weight yarn or Size 10 crochet thread, approx 150-200 yds. Please select a single yarn with no halo (i.e., no fuzz) and confirm that your yarn moves smoothly over your needles before class begins. ● Needles – US 0 (2 mm) or US 1 (2.25 mm) double pointed needles. Metal needles are recommended ● Crochet hook - 1.75 mm, 2.00 mm, or 2.25 mm crochet hook ● Pattern – Square Doily 5 by designer knittingfool ○ PDF of lace chart and written instructions will be emailed to attendees before the first class session. ● Notions – Scissors, darning/tapestry needle, thin stitch markers, optional: needle point protectors (set of 8 or 10) or a project saver bag to avoid stitches falling off your needles between knitting sessions *Students receive a 10% discount on materials purchased for the class from The Knitting Tree, L.A.
