Sit alone. In company. Have a rendez-vous, a tête-à-tête. Tock by Anna Kraitz is setting a stage. Cups will appear, glasses will gather, coffee will be sipped, drinks savoured, cakes shared, oysters devoured. A table creating a sanctuary in the middle of the bustling life of the city or a meeting place in the village. Notebooks show up to capture thoughts and dreams; drawings appear, cards awaiting to be played, books to be read, phones browsed. Tock waits sombrely for life to appear solitary or in company. And don’t we live in the attention of others? Cleaned of all clutter, and then once again occupied, Tock is ready for any type of occasion, mundane or festive. The perfect companion for the Olivia chair by Tatu Laakso, and voilà Tock offers a stage for debate, passion, friendship, and curiosity, as well as new flavors, ideas, and convivial meetings. The circular shape is intentional; it is an invitation to gather together, to get close, not looking sideways but deep into each other's eyes. A perfect form that celebrates sensory materiality creating community. The top is all massive dark oak reinforced with steel bars that will ensure the integrity of the top that will stand the passage of time. And then that special aluminum base anchoring Tock to the ground. Wood married to metal, the top sleek and inviting, the base sturdy and resistant. But more than that: the knurled insert embracing the pillar is an ornament in itself. A function all exposed and reminiscent of industrial mechanics. "I’ve always been fascinated by cogwheels." says Anna Kraitz stroking the base, "Tock is a reminder of a café or a bistro in Paris, or anywhere in central and southern Europe, and also of Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times where that opposition between man and machine turns into an aesthetic." Made in solid oak with its ponderous aluminum base, Tock finds itself at ease at home as well as in a café, a restaurant, a hotel lobby, indoors or outdoors. The particular base is made out of recycled sand casted aluminum, with the brushed surface yielding a hazy mirror to reflect legs and shoes, and possibly a resting place for a dog or a cat. Six small adjustable feet let the table stay firm. A rectangular version will be available on request. Anna Kraitz is considered one of the most significant contemporary designers in Sweden. Straddling the fine line between art and design, she brings about a subtle aesthetic sensibility. After studying in Hungary and at the Pernby School of Painting, she graduated from Beckmans College of Design in 1999 and has since worked as a furniture and product designer as well as running her own label.
