A Fragment of Old Katazome Cotton: Pieced and Patched
mid to late nineteenth century 32 1/2" x 16 3/4", 82.5 cm x 42.5 cm This is said to be a length of pieced and patched Edo period (mid nineteenth century) katazome and resist dyed, hand spun, hand woven cotton cloth. This cloth is composed of three pieces that are hand stitched stitched together. The background design is that of all-over arabesque or karakusa as it is called in Japan. Shown as undyed designs embedded into the background are what appear to be two different family crests. There is a subtle and very nice area of patching/mending on the top, left hand area of the cloth. This kind of cloth, with its pattern and its quality of cotton yarns, recalls the textiles of mid nineteenth century Japan and with this it is happily offered for sale.
