Stanczyk (1862)
Stanczyk, painted by Jan Matejko in 1862, shows a royal ball still in progress and one man who has stopped. Through the doorway the court dances in warm light. In the dark foreground the king's jester sits alone in his red costume, hands folded, staring at the floor. On the table beside him lies the letter: Smolensk has fallen to Moscow. He is the only person in the palace who has understood what that means.Matejko was 24 when he painted it, one year before Poland rose against Russian rule and lost. He set the scene in 1514 at the court of Queen Bona, then gave the jester his own face. The fool in the corner, the only man taking the news seriously, is a self portrait.
