Le Mont de Tauxières 2020

Mont de Tauxières is one of Georges Remy’s major single-parcel cuvées. A single parcel in Tauxières, planted with old massal selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in equal proportions. The soils are clay-limestone, with the proportion of clay decreasing as you move up the parcel. Here, Georges does not seek to isolate a single grape variety: the two are brought together to offer a complete expression of the site. The wine is vinified and aged in wood on fine lees, then bottled under cork for extended ageing in bottle. When we tasted it in Bouzy, the disgorgement was still recent and the wine did not reveal everything immediately. Yet the palate was already striking: a genuine ball of energy, with plenty of substance and a depth that gradually unfolded. The wine begins with tension, then gains breadth and dimension as it opens on the palate. It is a Champagne that is both dense and vibrant, still restrained in its youth, with the sense that everything is already in place and simply needs time to fully unfold. A beautiful bottle today, and probably even more so in a few years’ time. Still restrained in its youth, Mont de Tauxières already hints at its full dimension: a vibrant, profound wine that continues to gain breadth in the glass. One of the bottles that impressed us most during our tasting at the domaine.
