MICHAEL SNOW "CARLA BLEY" PHOTOLITHOGRAPH, 1965
Michael Snow (b. 1929) is one of the most remarkable multi-disciplinary Canadian artists. Snow is renowned for a diverse body of work including experimental films, jazz recordings, the "Walking Woman" series and large scale public art. Perhaps one of the most interesting characteristics of Snow's output is his ability to alternate between creating artwork that is populist and work that is avant-garde. "Walking Woman" is Michael Snow's most influential and iconic creation. It is a fascinating intersection between Pop Art and Conceptual Art. In this very sought-after multiple, perhaps one of the only from the series, the "Walking Woman" is personified by Snow's friend, collaborator and fellow musician, pianist "Carla Bley". Notice the vivid "Walking Woman" hand-stamp in the lower section of the work. This is an important element when assessing the work as it is light-sensitive and prone to fading. This example is notable for the presence and vividness of the stamp. This work is in the permanent collection of several important institutions including the National Gallery of Canada (Ottawa).
