Antique Wooden Peacock Door Handle | Carved Indian Architectural Artefact
Curator: The Blue Trunk Artist: Unknown Medium: Wood Size: 11 w x 1 d x 15 h in / 27.9 w x 2.5 d x 38.1 h cm Weight: 4 kgs A vintage Raja Ravi Varma oleograph titled Makarandeya, depicting one of the most dramatic episodes in Hindu mythology: Lord Shiva protecting the young sage Markandeya from Yama, the god of death. The composition captures the moment of divine intervention. The youthful Markandeya is shown seeking refuge in Shiva, while Yama, the deity who presides over death, approaches with his noose. Shiva appears as the powerful protector, intervening at the moment when Markandeya's destined death is challenged. The tension between the figures gives the image a strong narrative quality, characteristic of Ravi Varma's approach to mythological subjects. Care instructions: Wipe the piece with a soft, dry cloth. Do not expose it to direct sunlight, dampness, heat or cold. The Blue Trunk was born out of the passion to travel, and collect pieces that symbolise the rich cultural traditions and history of places travelled to.
