The story behind the work: This intimate-format drawing is a valuable historical testimony to the friendship that united the pianist and the Romanian-born Post-Impressionist painter (born Blumenfeld). Bloomfield, who moved in the Parisian avant-garde alongside figures such as Gertrude Stein, was a close friend of Cortot's family circle. The musician deeply admired his work and had actually written a highly complimentary preface for one of the painter's exhibitions. Drawn in March 1925, when Cortot was at the height of his international fame, this three-quarter portrait masterfully captures the virtuoso's attitude, possessed by his art. We find his legendary attributes here: the cravat of the Romantic artists and his famous "dandy" hairstyle (long hair swept back). The facial expression, both serious and approachable, is of great finesse. Kept by the artist for five years before he gifted it "with all his heart" to the pianist in 1930, this drawing of impeccable provenance is a choice piece for collectors of the School of Paris as well as for enthusiasts of music history.
