This is a sea chest (FUNADANSU) from Sakata, Yamagata Prefecture. Opening the sliding doors reveals small drawers, a inkstone box (suzuri-bako), and hidden compartments. Removing the removable panel (kendo-to) in the lower center uncovers a double-layered box, presumably used as a safe. With its clever arrangement of writing and accounting tools, this piece truly embodies the distinctive character of an accounting chest (chōbako).
