Tidal Mission: Pembrokeshire, Wales

A course in partnership with Tide is the one thing the Great Lakes can't teach. Five days on the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales learning to paddle in a tidal environment. This is an introduction to tidal water for Level 2 paddlers, not a big-water or tide-race course. The course runs from the Sea Kayak Academy base in Pembrokeshire, in a small group at a maximum of 1:4. We'll practise tidal planning, explore the Pembrokeshire coast, and paddle in moving water matched to the group. 5Paddling Days PembrokeshireWales, UK 1:4Coach Ratio L2Kayak Ontario Level The Week October 18 to 22, 2027: five coaching days. Each day's venue is chosen around the tide, the weather and the group, so there's no fixed itinerary. What's fixed is the progression. Mon to Tue Tidal fundamentals. Reading moving water, eddy lines, ferry angles, and timing your paddling around the tide. Wed to Thu Tidal journeys. Planning a route around the tide, then paddling it. Gentle moving-water practice once the group is ready. Fri Bring it together: the best journey the conditions allow, planned by the group. What You'll Learn Tidal planning: tide tables, tidal streams, and timing, turned into a go/no-go plan Moving water: eddy lines, ferry glides, and breaking in and out, in water pitched to the group Tidal journeying: using the stream to travel, and knowing where it stops helping Route and venue selection: making the daily call on a coast that changes by the hour What's Included Five full days of coaching, maximum 1:4 Sea kayak, paddle, and paddling equipment Shore-based tidal planning and navigation sessions Kayak Ontario online learning dashboard, with pre-course tidal preparation Optional: a tour of the Valley Sea Kayaks factory in Nottingham after the course. Book a UK course on your own and you'll likely join a group that has paddled tides all their lives. Here you learn alongside Ontario paddlers at the same stage as you, and come home with tidal experience that counts toward Level 3. Questions Is this a big-water or tide-race trip? No. It's an introduction to tidal water for Level 2 paddlers. Venues and conditions are chosen to suit the group, and the goal is understanding how tide works, not pushing into the biggest water Wales has. How is this different from Surf Mission: Montreal? Montreal is river current: it runs one way, all day, and the features stay put. Tide turns, speeds up, slows down, and moves the features with it. Pembrokeshire adds planning around that clock and journeying on an open coast. Do I need tidal experience? No. Great Lakes paddlers with solid Level 2 skills are exactly who this is built for. What if the weather is bad? The programme adapts rather than cancels: more sheltered water, or shore-based tidal planning and navigation. Is this a certification course? No. It's five coaching days, not an assessment. How many spots are there? Seven.
