London Symphony Orchestra, Vol. I & II by Zappa, performed by the London Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano, brings together Frank Zappa’s orchestral recordings from the early 1980s. Recorded with one of the world’s major classical ensembles, the set reflects Zappa’s long-running effort to place his written compositions in a fully symphonic setting. “Bob in Dacron” and “Sad Jane” unfold as multi-movement orchestral pieces, while “Mo ’n Herb’s Vacation” pushes the ensemble through dense rhythmic writing and sharp instrumental detail. “Strictly Genteel” closes the set with one of Zappa’s recurring concert works, presented here in its orchestral form.
