This is a 27 Inch Hand-Hammered Nepali Temple Gong One of a Kind Nepali temple gongs are hand-hammered in the Kathmandu Valley by bronze craftsmen specialists. This one is 27 inches across, hammered from a bronze in the bell-metal family, patinated dark, and finished with a full iconography that is unique to this one gong. The lotus flower is the central motif of this instrument, a full mature bloom with its seed pod at the heart of the field. It is born inside borders of fine beadwork. A smaller lotus answers at the bottom of the field, and floral sprays adorn the top, left, and right of the outer ring. The iconography here is a pure lotus mandala. The tone of this exact gong is D#3 carried on a G#2 about a fifth beneath it, with a long band of middle partials that hold through the sustain. Played with a soft mallet it builds slowly and opens to a long decay, with shimmer that comes from close partial pairs beating against each other roughly every second or two. The character opens warm at the strike and brightens as the sustain opens. Playing will favor a rolled crescendo and it rewards a single clean strike.
