Ancient Modernist Vase, Large
A monumental, one-of-a-kind ceramic vessel from the artist’s Ancient Modernism series. Hand-built using a traditional coil technique, the piece is layered with wild clay slips sourced from Japan and California, along with a rich combination of oxides and stains. Multiple firings create a deeply textured, timeworn surface adorned with abstract symbols and sculptural details. Inspired by the markings of an ancient language, the vessel has the mysterious presence of an artifact unearthed from another era. At 21 inches tall and weighing approximately 50 pounds, this is the largest work created for the series. Only a small handful of these vessels were made, making it an exceptionally rare and commanding piece. About Justin Hoffman Hoffman is a Bay Area ceramic artist and painter whose work shifts between sculpture, vessels, and three-dimensional objects and is heavily influenced by Japanese ceramic artists. Each piece is made by hand, with every form created in the moment. He studied wood-firing in Japan under two master potters and participated in a Noborigama firing in Seto, Japan.
