Mirage

Wool, silk, bamboo Wet felted Which effect may rapid and profound technological changes have on the way we find our place and anchor in the world? A globalized world and boundless virtual space offers an immense variety of role models, which can be enriching, provide broader horizons, greater freedom and more ways to define oneself, but can also lead to confusion and a sense of rootlessness. Some of them are not even real but generated artificially. How can we tell reality from fake and illusion? A subtitle I considered was actually “dis/connected”. Being constantly connected online might take the place of real-life interaction and alienate us more and more from the physical world around us. For my work I applied a technique that I used before in my highlands series, created during a residency stay in Bolivia. The hidden motif is revealed only when the top layer of several strata of felt is cut open. A deceptive image, the silhouette of a person seems to emerge from behind the pattern of a digital circuit board. In reality, this is not a whole, but only fragments, and the viewer’s eye automatically fills in the missing parts. Our brain strives to find something familiar in vague hints, to piece together fragments into a whole. Dagmar (Germany)
