Unusual Japanese Antique Kiri Hibachi Calligraphy and Moon

A beautifully crafted antique Japanese hibachi (火鉢) fashioned from lightweight kiri (paulownia) wood, distinguished by its richly textured natural wood grain and sophisticated decorative lacquer work. The cylindrical form rests upon three feet, while the sides are fitted with elegantly shaped wood handles, characteristic of the refined yet practical construction of traditional Japanese charcoal braziers. The exterior is decorated in gold maki-e lacquer, featuring an evocative seasonal composition of a large moon and delicate susuki (Japanese pampas grass). The restrained use of gold against the dark ground creates a particularly atmospheric effect, recalling the Japanese aesthetic of yūgen—beauty suggested through simplicity, shadow, and partial concealment. One side is further embellished with stylized Japanese calligraphy rendered in raised gold lacquer, extending vertically across the surface. The calligraphic decoration gives the hibachi the character of an object that is both functional and poetic, likely incorporating a literary or seasonal verse. The combination of moonlight, grasses, and calligraphy is strongly rooted in traditional Japanese artistic imagery, particularly the appreciation of autumnal scenes.
