Epimedium trifoliatobinatum

Barrenwort Berberidaceae A tiny Japanese Epimedium with a surprisingly complicated identity. Epimedium trifoliatobinatum is a rare species confined to a few localities on Shikoku, Japan, where it occurs in the region where E. grandiflorum and E. diphyllum naturally overlap. Kew currently accepts it as a distinct species, although Darrell Probst considers it remarkably similar to a stabilised, true-breeding form of E. × youngianum. The cultivated clone Cc 950046 was introduced by Probst and remains an especially interesting form. It is diminutive, reaching only around 12cm in flower, with a second flush of growth taking it to about 23cm. Rounded leaflets emerge bronzed in spring, later becoming green with attractive maroon flecking. The small white flowers have long spurs reminiscent of E. grandiflorum, but are beautifully proportioned to the plant. An excellent choice for the front of a woodland border or a shady trough, in humus-rich, moisture-retentive soil. Rare, refined and just complicated enough to keep the Epimedium enthusiast interested. Height: 12–23cm | Spread: 25–35cm Flowering: April–May | Foliage: Deciduous Hardiness: H6 (-20 to -15°C)
