Every volume so far, in order, from chapter one. We want to be straight with you: unlike our Demon Slayer and Jujutsu Kaisen sets, SPY×FAMILY is not a finished series. It is still being serialized in Japan, and the story continues past volume 17. Of everything we stock, this may be the best manga for a learner to start with Every kanji has furigana (the small hiragana printed alongside), so if you can read hiragana, you can sound out every line in the book. But the real reason we recommend this one first is the vocabulary is the Japanese you actually need. Family life, school, shopping, food, feelings, small talk, getting along with people. There are spies and assassins in the plot, but the scenes are built out of dinner tables, homework, parent-teacher interviews, and trying not to blow your cover at breakfast. Compare that to a battle series, where you spend a lot of energy learning words for attacks you will never use in conversation. A look inside our own copy One panel from our own copy. The reading marks sit just above each kanji: 遊 is あそ, 疲 is つか, 寝 is ね. And the whole line, 「遊び疲れて寝ちゃいました」 (she played herself to sleep), is exactly the kind of ordinary sentence you can actually use. Anya is a gift to beginners. She is a small child, and she speaks like one: short sentences, simple grammar, and charmingly wrong words. She calls her parents chichi (ちち) and haha (はは), which is not how a child would normally address them, and that mistake is itself a good little lesson in how Japanese family terms work. Her dialogue is often the most readable text on the page. Roughly JLPT N5 to N4 for Anya's lines, N4 to N3 overall. Loid's narration and the spy-plot exposition are a step up from the family scenes, which gives you a natural gradient to grow into within the same book.
