This piece offers a contemporary interpretation of the traditional Scottish quaich — from the Gaelic cuach, meaning "cup." Shallow and two-handled, bowls of this kind have been used across Scotland since the 17th century as vessels for shared drink and shared welcome. Known as the "cup of friendship," the quaich was traditionally passed hand to hand at weddings, christenings, and gatherings of honored guests — its twin handles inviting two hands, and two hearts, to meet over a single cup. To offer a quaich was to offer trust; to drink from one was to accept it in return.
