Medusa with Bow & Arrow Small Statue

An iconic figure from Greek mythology, Medusa is one of the three Gorgon sisters, and the only one who was mortal. Once a beautiful woman, she was cursed by Athena and turned into a monstrous creature with hair made of snakes and whose gaze would turn anyone she looked upon into stone. She appears in classical tales such as Hesiod’s Theogony (circa 1200 BCE) and Ovid’s Metamorphoses (8 CE). She was slain by the hero Perseus, who forced her to look into his reflective shield, thus turning her into stone. He later used her decapitated head as a weapon in battle. Medusa symbolized both terror and protection; ancient Greeks often placed her image on shields and temples to ward off evil.
