Yukiya Izumida Sekisou Retsuwan
“Sakuwan,” a new layered chawan by Izumita Yukiya, one of the artist’s signature forms. This powerful chawan is made from reddish clay, coated with white slip, and fired in a way that gives the surface the impression of having split open. The layered folds visible from the side reveal Izumita’s distinctive sense of form, with strata of clay overlapping one another like geological layers or the accumulation of time itself. Seen within the context of Chūwan, the flow of these layers may even recall the spiral of a galaxy. The irregular strata are not mere decoration; they possess the force of time itself revealed in cross-section. The interior is finished with a bronze glaze, quietly and deeply receiving the surrounding scenery like a black hole, while drawing the gaze inward. This is an exceptional work in which Izumita’s sculptural strength and the depth of time held within clay are powerfully condensed.
