July Introduction to Nerikomi – Pattern & Form w/ Asa Nagao

Join artist and instructor, Asa Nagao, in this four-week discovery in the art of Nerikomi, a Japanese pottery technique where different colored clays are layered, stacked, and sliced to create beautiful patterns that run through the clay. The patterns can look like marbling, stripes, or mosaics, and they stay visible even after the piece is shaped and fired. It’s a way to make intricate, decorative designs without using paint or glaze. Location Still Life Ferndale 700 Livernois St., Ferndale, MI 48220 Thursdays from 7-9 pm Class Outline Each session focuses on a specific aspect: Week 1: Coloring Clay & Basic Patterns Week 2: Playing with Pattern Week 3: Shaping the Clay – Handbuilding Forms Week 4: Finishing Touches & Surface Prep It is recommended that you are already comfortable working with basic hand-building techniques. Everyone will be encouraged to have fun and enjoy this journey. About This Class To get the most out of this class, we recommend you feel comfortable with all of the steps and processes you learned in Beginning Handbuilding. SLS's recycled studio clay and bisque firing for up to 12 pieces are included in the class. For non-members, glaze firing is included in the course fee. Additional clay is available for purchase as well. You will need to supply your own tools, we recommend our Signature All-Inclusive Pottery Tool Kit. Cancellations made 4 or more days before the start of the class will be refunded. For cancellations made fewer than 4 full days, but more than 24 hours before the start time, a 50% refund or 50% credit toward another class or workshop will be issued. We cannot provide refunds or credits for cancellations or rescheduling requests made fewer than 24 hours before the start time of class, if you miss your class, or arrive too late to participate.
