Mauritia flexuosa Buriti Oil hails from the fruit of the Brazilian Moriche palm and is considered once of the highest natural sources of beta-carotene. Fruiting occurs once every two years and the palms require a saturation of water in order to produce fruit. The palms are typically found in swamps and floodplains and the fruit also substitutes for acai fruit production for the local communities as a food source and as a trade source. Rich in vitamin E tocopherols it can help to reduces oxidisation in formulas and is compatible with sensitive skin. Beta-carotene concentration protects skin-cells against photo-oxidation and has an ability to absorb radiation in the range of visible and ultra-violet light making it suitable for before and after sun formulations. Buriti has a deep red-orange colour and may stain clothes and skin.
