Restoration of Mid-Century Pair of Recliner Chairs
Mid-Century Pair of Recliner Chairs Restoration Project Volume: 2 Recliner Chairs Material Selection: Chelsea Mix Fabric (Colour: Harbour Green) 1. Project Scope In-Scope (What Is Included) Timber Strip & Refinish: Removal of old finishes using either a chemical paint strip followed by mechanical sanding, or a direct mechanical sanding strip depending on the varnish density. The timber will be completely refinished using a premium, professional-grade Osmo Natural Oil-Wax finish (2 coats of Clear Satin). Structural Frame Restoration: Complete structural reglue of all loose timber joinery and frame components as pictured to guarantee structural integrity. Full Spring Replacement: The existing, rusted metal inner frames will be completely stripped of their decayed burlap support material. All support springs will be replaced with brand-new, high-tensile upholstery springs (5 tensile springs for the seat base, 4 tensile springs for the backrest per chair) to restore maximum support. Premium Reupholstery & Re-Foaming: Full upholstery of the seat and backrest using the client's chosen Chelsea Mix fabric in Harbour Green. The Backrest: Reconstructed with premium contoured foam to mirror the ergonomic shape pictured. The Seat: Fitted with premium heavy-duty H35-200 Blue Foam at a low-profile 8cm thickness to ensure lasting, medium-firm support. Dacron Wrapping: All foam cores will be fully wrapped in professional-grade 100gsm Dacron sheeting to soften the edges, fill out the fabric properly, and prevent shifting or friction wear over time. Cushion Design & Stitching: Clean, minimalist Box Wrap Cushions with a crisp top stitch. There are no decorative welting, piping, or accent highlights on the seams. To ensure a sleek, unblemished aesthetic, the closures and functional joining seams are hidden out of sight—located at the rear-bottom of the backrest and the absolute back-edge of the seat cushion. The backrest cushion is custom-tailored to seamlessly slip over the upper metal backrest frame as pictured. Dimension Verification: Final, exact foam measurements will be documented and confirmed prior to cutting and fabric fabrication. Out-of-Scope (What Is Excluded) Opaque Lacquer Finishes: Opaque paint, heavy solid lacquers, or full color-blocking lacquer finishes designed to completely hide the timber's natural grain are strictly excluded. Hidden Timber Defects: Rectification of hidden structural defects or severe timber rot uncovered only after chemical paint stripping is excluded from this quote and will be assessed separately if found. Mechanical Hardware: Repair, replacement, or mechanical machining of internal reclining hardware/metal pivoting mechanisms is excluded; existing hardware will be lubricated and reinstalled as-is. New Metal Inner Frames: Fabricating or replacing the main inner rod-metal seat/back frames is excluded; the existing metal inserts will be cleaned and reused as-is. Logistics: Pickup and delivery of the pair of chairs are not included in this base scope. 2. Timeline Estimated Completion: Four (4) weeks from the date the initial deposit is processed and confirmed. 3. Quality Standards Timber Refinishing & Tone Policy The Premium Osmo Finish: Our default, highly recommended restoration method uses Osmo Polyx-Oil (Made in Germany). Osmo is globally recognized as the Class-1, ultimate tier-1 finish used by elite professional restorers for both bespoke new furniture and master vintage restorations. This microporous, natural oil-wax coating penetrates deep into the wood to provide hardwearing, dirt- and water-repellent protection without creating a plastic film, allowing the timber to breathe and speak for itself. Species & Color Variations: Mid-century furniture often utilizes a combination of different timber species or varying cuts within the same frame (for example, combining Teak and Blackwood). A natural finish will intentionally highlight these distinct tones and species variations rather than hiding them. This variance is highly valued, authentic, and standard for mid-century furniture. Tints & Stains (The Uniform Option): If a more uniform appearance is preferred, we can introduce subtle wood tints/stains to blend the tones closer together. However, please note that even with tints, natural variations between different wood species (like Teak and Blackwood) will still subtly show through. Sanding & Surface Prep: Wood surfaces will be meticulously prepared using a calculated combination of professional machine sanding and detailed hand sanding. Surfaces will be taken up through a fine 180 to 240 grit progression prior to oiling to ensure a flawlessly smooth touch. Character & Defect Management: Professional color-matched timber putty, wax, or custom resin/sawdust combinations will be utilized to seamlessly fill any small-to-medium vintage chips or voids. Due to the aged nature of vintage timber, less than 5% of microscopic, historical surface marks may remain visible underneath the clear Osmo coat. Foam Standard: Industry-best practice guidelines will be strictly followed for independent seat (firm/resilient H35-200) and backrest (moulded/contoured comfort) foam selection to ensure the ideal balance of longevity and lumbar support. 4.
