Physocarpus opulifolius - Common Ninebark
Ninebark is a cold-hardy native shrub. It is an upright spreading shrub with a wide variety of cultivars varying in size and leaf color. Young twigs are shiny and reddish-brown. Older, mature stems have brown exfoliating bark that shines most in the winter when foliage does not cover it. The common name comes from the layers of bark, said to be 9 layers. The arching branches of Common Ninebark give this shrub a full, mounded shape. Five petaled flowers appear in dense, spirea-like clusters in spring, and give way to clusters of reddish-pink seed pods Height: 3-8 ft Sun: full sun, part shade Water: Medium to wet Bloom color: White, Pink Bloom time: May, June
