French Napoleon III Style Giltwood Lantern

A French Napoléon III–style gilt lantern, hand-carved in wood and finished in gold leaf by the master craftsmen at La Maison London. The design is inspired by a late 19th-century bespoke monumental lantern commissioned for one of Belgium’s most distinguished historic residences - the Château de Beloeil. Reflecting the richness of the Second Empire, the piece brings together classical structure and sculptural ornament. Finely carved caryatids, a crown-form corona, and laurel swags are seamlessly integrated into the composition, drawing on the decorative language of the period with both fluency and precision. The interplay between architectural clarity and decorative movement gives the lantern its distinctive presence - at once composed and richly expressive. Finished in hand-applied gilt leaf and layered with an antique patination, the surface reveals a natural warmth and depth that enhances the intricacy of the carving. The finish is developed to echo the tonal variation and softness found in historic gilt surfaces, allowing the piece to sit comfortably within both traditional and more contemporary interiors. Each lantern is carved by specialist artisans and finished and patinated by hand in our London atelier. This combination of expert carving and in-house finishing allows for a high level of refinement across both form and surface. Working from the original design, the lantern can be produced in a range of diameters and proportions, allowing it to be tailored precisely to its architectural setting - from more intimate interior placements to larger scale entrance halls or stairwells. We work closely with our clients to refine scale, proportion, and finish, ensuring each piece sits naturally within the space it is created for. Adjustments to tone, patination, and detailing can be made to respond to the surrounding interior, reinforcing the sense that each piece is not simply placed, but belongs. Each lantern made to order has a lead time of approximately 16 weeks. A versatile statement piece, particularly suited to entrance halls, stairwells, or covered exterior spaces, where a sense of history and craftsmanship is desired.
