A large-scale Italian painting dating from around the 1930s–40s, influenced by Futurism, the avant-garde movement that celebrated the energy, speed, and dynamism of a rapidly modernising world. The work is strongly reminiscent of Umberto Boccioni’s exploration of movement and form, although the artist remains unknown. We do know that they were based in Genova. The oil paint has been applied lightly, almost like a sketch, giving the work a sense of motion. The abstracted forms suggest speed and movement a warm colour palette.
