Mindset in Photography (Talk by Kevin Lim) 4th July 2026
Mindset in Photography A Talk by Kevin Lim Photography is often understood as a tool for documenting reality. This talk proposes a different perspective: photography as a constructed visual language that shapes how we perceive and understand the world. Drawing from psychology, neurology, surrealism, and both Eastern and Western philosophical traditions, the session explores how images create meaning rather than simply record it. Through discussions on visual signs, cultural codes, memory, identity, and belief, participants will examine how perception is formed and how images influence our experience of reality. In an era where AI-generated imagery increasingly blurs the boundaries between the real and the imagined, questions of perception, truth, and visual literacy have become more relevant than ever. Photography becomes a lens through which to investigate not only what we see, but how we see, how meaning is constructed, and how images shape the realities we inhabit. This talk invites participants to reconsider the assumptions behind perception and to explore visual fluency as an essential skill in understanding contemporary image culture. This talk is suitable for: • Photographers • Artists and designers • Writers and researchers • Educators and students • Anyone interested in visual culture, philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, and the role of images in shaping meaning It is particularly relevant for those looking to deepen their understanding of photography beyond technique and documentation, and to engage with the broader intellectual and cultural frameworks through which images are created, interpreted, and understood.
