Meet the Producer Los Nogales — Oscar Hernández, El Diamante, Bruselas (Huila) Founded by Ricardo Hernández in the early 1950s in the El Diamante village outside Bruselas, southern Huila, Los Nogales is one of Colombia's most influential specialty farms. Ricardo's son Ricaurte built it into a benchmark operation and won the inaugural Colombia Cup of Excellence in 2005, then placed the lot with Maruyama Coffee in Japan — proof, at the time, that Colombian microlots could command global premiums. Ricaurte was killed in 2013 resisting an armed theft of his crop. The farm is now run by his youngest son, Oscar Fernando Hernández — industrial engineer, former Colombian naval officer, and environmental-management technologist trained at SENA. His sister Angie, also an industrial engineer, leads the fermentation lab. Under their stewardship Los Nogales has become a research-driven operation working with yeast- and LAB-controlled fermentations, thermal shock, and dark-room drying across Typica, Wush Wush, Yellow Colombia and other cultivars.
