Mary at his left in her blue and red gown, hands clasped, looking up. St. John the Beloved at his right, head bowed. Above them all, God the Father in the clouds holding the globe of the world, and the Holy Spirit as a dove descending between Father and Son. The sun on one side, the moon on the other. INRI written above the crossbeam. The sky behind is dark. Everything that matters is gold. This is a painting of the Trinity and the Crucifixion held together in a single image, the way the Church has always understood them. The Father who sent him, the Spirit who sustained him, the Son who gave himself, and the two who stayed. The frame is solid wood, hand-carved in a baroque scroll pattern and finished in gold leaf.
