FAQ IGCSE Chinese: Do I need to be a native Chinese speaker to take these exams? No, the specification is designed for students who have studied Chinese from scratch and the exams are set at a level suitable for someone in this position. Is the exam for Mandarin or Cantonese speakers? The exam is available for both Mandarin and Cantonese speakers, the listening exam will have specific recordings for each language and the papers are all written with both traditional and simplified characters allowing students to select their preference. I am resitting, can I carry forward my speaking exam? Yes, please ensure you select the correct option above. You will need to provide the UCI number you used when you originally took the exams and proof of the original mark for this component. What are the arrangements for the speaking part of the exam? The speaking part of the exam is conducted at our centre in Birmingham in May. You will be sent a date and time for your speaking exam by mid April. Two weeks before the exam you will be required to supply a picture for the first section of the speaking exam. The picture must contain at least 2 people and show them interacting and have objects in the background. The picture must not contain any text. The speaking exam takes no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Please remember to bring your ID to the speaking exam. How does the listening examination work? Candidates are provided with their own MP3 player onto which the listening files have been downloaded; you will need to provide your own noise cancelling headphones or earphones which has a jack connector. Am I allowed a dictionary in the exams? No, dictionaries are not allowed for any of the exams.
