An absolutely classic ’50s lithograph, Petworth Gates reflects Piper’s longstanding interest in British architectural subjects, particularly those he felt were overlooked such as the gates and entrances to country houses. Here, Piper uses the simple device of a 5-colour lithograph to capture the ornate mystery of the main entrance to Petworth House in Sussex. Petworth House is a late 17th century Grade I listed country house in the parish of Petworth, West Sussex. It was built in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and altered in the 1870s to the design of the architect Anthony Salvin. It contains intricate wood-carvings by Grinling Gibbons (d. 1721). More images can be provided on request. Artist: John Piper (1903 – 1992) Title and date: Petworth Gates, West Sussex, 1958, (Levinson 261) Size: image: 43.0 x 56.0 cms.
