Weekly Woodworking Workshop

Weekly Woodworking Workshop is a guided, self-paced woodworking program for adults who want to build real wood working skills through project-based learning. This class uses Bull City Woodshop’s hands-on curriculum, originally developed for our youth woodworking programs, and opens it up to the general public. Participants work through a series of structured projects designed to build confidence, tool knowledge, safety habits, measuring skills, project planning, and overall woodworking ability. This is a great fit if you are newer to woodworking, want more practice with tools before using Open Shop independently, or want a flexible way to build your skills over time. Class Schedule: Saturdays, 10:00 AM–12:30 PM Please select the date you would like to attend when registering. How WWW Works: Each session is 2.5 hours long. Participants work through the curriculum at their own pace with volunteer instructors available for support, demonstrations, questions, and guidance. This is not a one-day “make and take” class where everyone completes the same project at the same time. Instead, Shop Class is designed so you can move through the curriculum project by project. You can attend as many sessions as you would like. If you miss a week, that is okay. When you come back, you will pick up where you left off. What You’ll Work On: Participants begin with foundational projects and move into more involved builds as their skills develop. Early projects may include items such as a push stick, trivet, phone/tablet stand, mallet, and other skill-building projects. Each project includes written instructions and is designed to introduce or reinforce specific woodworking skills. As you progress, you will practice measuring, cutting, sanding, drilling, shaping, finishing, and safely using tools in a shared shop environment. Skills You’ll Build: Shop Class is designed to help participants become more confident and independent woodworkers. Projects focus on both hands-on tool skills and the habits needed to work safely and successfully in the shop. You will work on skills such as: • Safe behavior around power tools • Measuring and marking accurately • Following written instructions and project plans • Cutting, sanding, drilling, shaping, and finishing • Problem-solving when something does not go exactly as planned • Building confidence through repetition and practice Instructor Support: Volunteer instructors will be present during each session to help oversee the shop, answer questions, demonstrate tools, and support participants as they work through the curriculum. WWW is guided, but also self-paced. Participants should expect to read instructions, follow project steps, ask questions when needed, and take ownership of their own progress. Capstone Projects: Each level of the curriculum ends with a capstone project. A capstone gives you the chance to revisit and build on the skills you have already practiced. For your capstone, you may: • Modify or improve a previous project • Work on a personal project that fits your current skill level • Choose from other Bull City Woodshop project plans Capstones are a chance to plan, problem-solve, and make something more personal while still working within safe and appropriate shop guidelines. Connection to Open Shop: Shop Class can also be a pathway toward Community Open Shop. Open Shop is intended for people who can work safely and independently in the shop. Participants who complete Level 1 of the curriculum may be eligible to use Open Shop without completing the separate Open Shop Tool Proficiency Check. If you want extra time to work on projects outside of class, Community Open Shop may be a good next step once you are approved for independent shop use. Who This Class Is For: • Are newer to woodworking • Want structured practice with real tools • Want a flexible class they can return to over time • Learn best through hands-on projects • Want instructor support but do not need a private lesson • Are interested in eventually using Open Shop independently • Want to build confidence before starting larger personal projects This class may not be the best fit if you are looking for private one-on-one instruction, immediate independent shop access, or a single-session class where everyone completes the exact same project in one day. Materials: Basic project materials are included unless otherwise noted. If you choose to work on a larger unique capstone project, you are responsible for providing your own lumber, hardware, or specialty materials. Important: All participants must follow shop safety rules and instructor guidance. Bull City Woodshop reserves the right to adjust project plans, tool access, or participation based on safety, skill level, shop capacity, and instructor availability.
