A Brooklyn Girl's Extraordinary Sampler In 1848, nine-year-old Catharine Elizabeth Corse picked up her needle in New York City and created something truly remarkable. The first New York City sampler in our collection, Catharine was a true Brooklyn girl — born, married, raised four children, and spent her entire life in New York until her passing in 1907. What makes this sampler particularly special is its use of perforated paper rather than linen. Catharine adorned her name with French-cut steel beads, many of which have beautifully aged and oxidized over time, adding to the sampler's unique character. I am absolutely delighted to share this remarkable piece with you, and hope you enjoy stitching it as much as we enjoyed bringing it back to life.
