When a fixture, housing or functional prototype outgrows a typical desktop build plate, splitting it into smaller sections adds seams, assembly work and another source of dimensional error. Larger engineering-polymer parts also need better thermal control than an open-frame printer can provide; uneven cooling can lead to warped corners, cracking and layer separation. The CreatBot D400 HS addresses both constraints in an enclosed professional FDM/FFF platform. Its single-extrusion workspace measures 420 × 400 × 420 mm, while smart dual auto-rising extruders support secondary model materials, two-color work and dedicated support-material workflows. A 420°C maximum nozzle temperature, 120°C heated build plate and actively heated 70°C chamber provide the thermal range required by many standard, engineering-grade and fiber-reinforced filaments. For production efficiency, the D400 HS combines Klipper-based firmware with a maximum volumetric flow rate of 90 mm³/s, automatic calibration, filament monitoring, power-loss recovery and remote camera access. The D400 HS is positioned for engineering teams that have outgrown conventional desktop machines but do not require the footprint, power consumption or material capacity of a 600 mm or one-meter industrial printer. Key Features 420 × 400 × 420 mm single-extrusion build volume: Produce larger prototypes, tools and end-use components as one part instead of dividing them solely to fit a smaller build plate. Smart dual auto-rising extruders: Use a second model, color or support material while the inactive nozzle lifts away from the part. Automatic dual-nozzle shutters: A mechanical shutter closes over each inactive nozzle to help control oozing during dual-extrusion printing. 420°C maximum nozzle temperature: Provides the thermal range needed by many engineering-grade and fiber-reinforced materials identified as compatible by CreatBot. 70°C actively heated chamber: Maintains a more stable thermal environment around the part, reducing temperature gradients that can contribute to warping, cracking and interlayer separation. 120°C heated build plate: Supports adhesion and controlled first-layer conditions for higher-temperature materials. 90 mm³/s maximum volumetric flow: Supplies the material output needed for higher-throughput deposition when the nozzle, filament and part geometry permit. Automatic bed and nozzle calibration: Eddy-current bed probing, camera-assisted XY alignment and photoelectric Z-offset sensing reduce repetitive setup work. Removable magnetic build surface: Allows the print surface to be removed for easier part release. Print-recovery functions: Filament detection, power-loss recovery and dual-nozzle backup help protect longer print jobs. HEPA and activated-carbon filtration: Combines particulate filtration with odor and VOC adsorption inside the enclosed system. Networked or offline operation: Transfer files over Wi-Fi or LAN, connect locally without cloud access, or print from a USB storage drive. Remote camera monitoring: Check supported printer functions without remaining beside the machine. Door-opening detection: Configure the printer to pause or stop if the chamber door is opened. Applications Functional prototypes and design-validation models Jigs, fixtures and assembly aids Forms, patterns and molds Automotive and robotics components Housings, brackets and equipment components Replacement and spare parts Low-volume and customized production Engineering-material process development Multi-material and two-color parts Complex geometries using soluble or breakaway supports Application suitability depends on the material, nozzle construction, slicing parameters, part geometry and required mechanical or dimensional performance. Printing, Thermal & Material Capability Single- and Dual-Extrusion Capacity The available workspace depends on the selected extrusion mode: Printing Mode Build Volume Single extrusion 420 × 400 × 420 mm Dual extrusion 365 × 400 × 420 mm Single-extrusion mode provides the full 420 mm X-axis capacity. Using both extruders reduces the usable X-axis width to 365 mm, which should be considered when a large part requires a second model or support material. Smart Dual Extrusion The two extruders rise independently. When one nozzle is inactive, it lifts away from the print plane to reduce the possibility of dragging across the printed part. A mechanical shutter closes over the inactive nozzle to help manage residual material flow during tool changes. This is particularly useful when combining a model material with soluble or breakaway support or when unwanted material transfer would affect the part surface. The second nozzle can also operate as a filament backup during single-material printing. If the primary filament runs out, the machine can switch to the secondary nozzle and continue. This function requires: The same material in both extruders Identical nozzle diameters A calibrated offset for the second nozzle Using different materials or mismatched nozzle diameters in backup mode can cause flow problems, layer shifting or print failure. Actively Heated Build Chamber Larger engineering-polymer parts are sensitive to the difference between extrusion temperature, previous-layer temperature and the surrounding air. As that temperature gradient increases, internal stress can pull corners away from the platform or separate the part along layer lines. The D400 HS combines: 420°C maximum nozzle temperature 120°C maximum build-plate temperature 70°C maximum chamber temperature An insulated enclosure The actively heated chamber is particularly relevant to ABS, ASA, PC, nylon and reinforced materials that benefit from controlled cooling. It maintains more consistent conditions around the part instead of exposing every layer to ambient room air. The D400 HS is not an ultra-high-temperature PEEK-class machine. Applications involving PEEK, PEI or other ultra-high-temperature polymers require a printer with substantially higher chamber and build-plate temperatures. High-Flow Extrusion Print speed alone does not determine production time. The extrusion system must melt and deposit enough material to support the selected travel speed, layer height and extrusion width. The D400 HS has a specified maximum volumetric flow rate of 90 mm³/s. This supports higher material output when paired with an appropriate material profile and nozzle. Larger nozzles can reduce print time for tooling, fixtures and substantial prototypes where throughput is more important than fine surface detail. Actual output depends on: Filament type and melt behavior Nozzle diameter Layer height and extrusion width Part geometry Cooling requirements Support strategy Surface-finish expectations Maximum machine capability should not be treated as the expected production setting for every material or feature. Automatic Calibration Large build platforms amplify small setup errors. A minor height difference can cause poor adhesion in one area and excessive first-layer compression in another. The D400 HS uses: Eddy-current bed leveling: Non-contact sensing measures the build surface and creates a compensation mesh. Camera-assisted XY calibration: A macro camera assists with aligning the two nozzles across the X and Y axes. Photoelectric Z-offset sensing: Dual sensors help establish the vertical relationship between the nozzles and platform. Input-shaper calibration: Klipper-based calibration helps tune the motion system for the installed configuration. CreatBot’s 0.001 mm bed-probing figure and its stated XY/Z offset figures describe sensing or calibration precision. They are not guaranteed tolerances for finished parts. Final dimensional results also depend on material shrinkage, calibration, slicing parameters and geometry. Removable Magnetic Platform The build system combines an aviation-aluminum platform with a removable magnetic sheet. The aluminum base provides a rigid, thermally conductive foundation, while the removable surface can be taken out of the enclosure for easier part removal. Compatible Materials CreatBot identifies the following materials as compatible with the D400 HS: Material Group Compatible Materials Standard thermoplastics PLA, PETG, PP, TPU Engineering thermoplastics ABS, ASA, PC, nylon Carbon-fiber composites ABS-CF, PC-CF, PET-CF, UltraPA-CF, PPS-CF, PA-CF, PP-CF Glass-fiber composites PET-GF, PA-GF, PP-GF Polymer blends PA-ABS, PC-ABS Compatibility means the printer provides an appropriate general processing platform. It does not mean every filament can use the same nozzle, build surface or print profile. Carbon- and glass-fiber materials are abrasive. Confirm the installed nozzle material and the filament manufacturer’s hardware requirements before extended use. Long-Print Protection The cost of an interruption increases with part size and print duration. The D400 HS provides: Filament runout detection and automatic pause Power-loss recovery Dual-nozzle filament backup Remote camera monitoring Door-opening detection On-screen speed and flow adjustment Before resuming after a power interruption, confirm that the part remains securely attached to the platform. Continuing with a warped or detached part can cause a printhead collision. Cooling and Filtration An external air-pump system supplies printhead and model cooling without relying entirely on air drawn from the heated chamber. The enclosed filtration system combines: A HEPA particulate filter An activated-carbon filter A chamber exhaust fan Filtration can reduce particles, odors and volatile compounds released into the immediate environment. It should not replace facility ventilation or exposure controls required by the filament manufacturer, safety data sheet or workplace policy.
