Carve & Print: How-To One-Colour Linocut
Discover the tactile art of relief printing in this hands-on, four-hour workshop. Guided by artist Kess Gregory, owner of Doom and Gloom, you will learn how to turn a drawing into a custom carved linocut block print. Explore where linocut comes from and the tools involved, sketch or transfer your design onto a linoleum block, and master safe carving techniques using various gouges. Finish by inking your block, pulling handmade impressions onto paper, and learning the possibilities of garment printing. Workshop Schedule (4 Hours) Phase 1: History, Tools & Design Transfer Learning about linocut history, what linoleum is, and the essential tools used in relief printing. Drawing simple patterns directly on the block or using transfer paper to move 4x6 sketches onto linoleum. Phase 2: Safe Carving & Gouge Techniques Demonstrating V-tools, U-tools, and proper cutting techniques to carve out designs carefully. Hands-on carving practice utilizing bench hooks to keep hands safe behind cutting edges. Phase 3: Block Refinement & Proofing Clearing background space, refining line work, and adding texture to carved blocks. Preparing blocks for inking and pulling test proofs to check line clarity. Phase 4: Inking, Paper Printing & Garment Demo Rolling out water-based relief ink with brayers and hand-printing impressions onto fine art paper. Demonstrating how linoleum blocks can be printed onto garments and fabrics. Reviewing finished work and drying your custom handmade prints. By The End Of This Workshop, You Will Understand the essential tools needed to create a linocut relief print. Learn how to draw and properly transfer designs onto a linoleum block. Understand how to carefully control gouges and marking tools for safe carving. Create your own custom print carved by your own hands and explore garment printing. What We Provide Carving Tools & Safety: Linoleum blocks, carving gouges, and wooden bench hooks. Inks & Media: Water-based relief inks, brayers, inking plates, fine art paper, and baren tools. Facilities: Full studio access and clean printmaking stations. What To Bring & Requirements Sketch or Reference (Optional): Bring an optional pre-drawn 4x6-inch sketch or reference image, or draw something new during class. Apparel: Wear clothes and shoes that can handle ink. No Experience Required: Open to beginners aged 14 and up.
