Mitre Peak, Milford Sound

Mitre Peak is the sheer, pyramid-shaped mountain that guards the entrance to Milford Sound (Piopiotahi), deep in New Zealand's Fiordland National Park on the South Island's south-west coast. The wider region, Te Wāhipounamu, is a UNESCO World Heritage Area. The peak takes its name from its likeness to a bishop's mitre, rising almost straight out of the dark water of the fiord. Stephen Milner photographed it in black and white at first light, cloud wrapping the summit as the fiord fell still enough to hold a near-perfect reflection of the mountains on the water.
