19th Century Antique Seascape ~ Oil on Panel

A wonderfully atmospheric late 19th Century antique seascape oil painting depicting a fleet of sailing boats in choppy water beneath a softly glowing evening sky. In the smaller boat in the foreground, a man points at the larger sailboat, caught in the rough seas and leaving heavily at an angle. Could he be pointing back to the boat he has just had to abandon? Looking on as his ship mates that weren't so lucky battle their fate? While we can't be certain of the exact story, the mood is clear. The turbulent scene that unfolds is contrasted with heavenly skies above, which have an ethereal glow about them. It is the atmosphere and the colours that really make this painting special. Signed A Morlan, the artist has captured the movement of the sea with loose, confident brushwork while the distant pink horizon lends a gentle romantic quality to the composition.
