Solid Oak Fireplace Beam Mantel – Heavily Worked Finish Our solid European oak fireplace beam mantels are individually handcrafted and heavily worked to bring out the natural character and rustic beauty of the timber. Each beam is unique, with its own grain patterns, knots, pinholes, natural cracks, and waney edges. The oak is planed and sanded on all four sides before being carefully worked to create a distinctive rustic finish. Step 2: Measure the distance between the keyhole hangers on the back of the beam, including the distance from the centre. Step 3: Transfer these measurements onto the level line marked on the wall. Step 4: Drill 7 mm holes at the marked positions. Step 5: Insert the appropriate wall plugs and screws. Step 6: Carefully lower the beam onto the keyhole hangers and ensure it is securely positioned. Installation – Bar Fixings Step 1: Use a spirit level to mark a straight, level line on the wall. Step 2: Fit the bar fixings into the beam. Step 3: Hold the beam against the wall along the marked line and mark the positions of the bars. Step 4: Drill a 5–10 mm pilot hole at each marked position. Step 5: Enlarge the holes to approximately 18 mm. Step 6: Insert the bars into the prepared holes and gradually push the beam into position from side to side until fully seated. Please Note – Natural Oak Characteristics Oak is a natural product, so every beam will vary slightly in colour, grain, texture, and overall appearance. These natural differences are part of what makes each fireplace beam unique. Our character beams may already contain surface cracks, knots, pinholes, splits, and waney edges. Although the timber is dried for the climate, natural oak can continue to shrink, move, split, and develop further cracks as it acclimatises to the temperature and humidity of your property. These natural changes are not considered defects and are often what give reclaimed-style and rustic oak beams their distinctive character. Installing Above a Fire or Log Burner If the beam is being installed above a log burner, fireplace, or another source of intense heat, we recommend gradually increasing the heat over a period of one week or longer where possible. This allows the oak to acclimatise gradually and helps minimise sudden movement or cracking caused by rapid changes in temperature. Important: Always ensure the beam is installed at a safe distance from heat sources and in accordance with the manufacturer's installation and clearance requirements for your fireplace or log burner.
