Antique Victorian Pine Travelling Railway Egg Crate The Dairy Outfit & Co London Late 19th / very early 20th Century A turn of the century wooden crate used for the safe transportation of fresh eggs via railway from farms to markets. Constructed of sturdy pine wood with protective metal corners for reinforcements, the interior is sectioned into small snug compartments which hold the eggs. The box also features an original paper instructional advertisement which details various "safety egg boxes" with their qualities and sizing available. The exterior of the crate is stencilled with the words "Eggs" & "Standard" along with the stamp on the top reading "The Dairy Outfit Co. Ltd." along with other information. The lid has a carry handle and the front has a metal latch which secures the top to the body. A padlock can be used here to secure the crate shut if necessary. The Dairy Outfit Co. Ltd. was a prominent late-Victorian and early-20th-century manufacturer and supplier of dairy appliances, based in King's Cross, London, They specialised in farming and dairy equipment, including specialised milk pails and patented wooden "travelling egg boxes" such as this one used to transport farm produce safely by railway.
